Trocadero Before Restoration
Carved Stone Caps
As you can see from the prehistoric stone bed and probably later to a hand carved cap
Getting ready on instructions by Ken Buxton structural engineer, William Martin, Ian Long, English Heritage, West Minster Council and the Trocadero management for taking the apex monument down to rebuild and restore to it's original state.
Ideally this stiff foliage would have been hand carved, unfortunately the time and budget constraints of this project dictated this alternative restoration. Some people incorrectly refer to this as plastic repair, but we prefer to refer to it as blocking out and building up. This type of restoration repair has a very short life expectancy, unlike our preferred restoration method of hand carved natural stone.
The fixer is setting preconstituted stones into their correct positions. DJF recommended natural stone because its more flexible, has higher tolerances and greater life expectancy.
The sand stone carving was completed by Austin and Farleigh Masonry Limited.
This is the original decorative cap that was sent to the carver for copying.
